Untreated wastewater is released in the Aliakmonas River, the city councils shared

Untreated wastewater is released into the Aliakmonas, the longest river in the country, from a wastewater treatment plant in Veria.

The problem was raised at a meeting of the Central Mazedonia Region's Council, in which the hearing that the untreated mud penetrates into the river via a small tributary.

The city councils also heard that the farmers pump water out of the water along the polluted tributary to irrigate their harvests.

The matter was reported to the Veria Municipal Council several times, while a prosecutor was informed about the case in 2018 without ever being brought to trial, the city council Ioannis Tsanaxidis said of the meeting.

The regional authorities said they intended to impose sanctions against the Veria abnormal treatment plant sanctions, since they did not take “correction measures that were taken to solve the operational problems in the facility.
