“Based on witness interviews and their observations at the scene, they found that a mechanical malfunction was the most likely cause, although the exact type of malfunction could not be determined,” said Davine's Office.

But the fire quickly spread through the three -story apartment building in the back of the Iglesia Evangelica Congregacional Church, about 10 feet away, according to the explanation.

Other houses in the Broad Street were evacuated before precautionary measures when the winch blew into other structures in the neighborhood at about 20 miles per hour, said Davine's office. Firefighters finally contained fire with the help of other fire brigades, including Swampscott, Melrose, Saucus, Revere, Salem, Marblehead, Chelsea, Lynnfield and Boston.

“Our hearts remain with the families who have lost their home and all of our community members who have lost their church,” said Lynn Daniel Sullivan's fire brigade in the explanation. “More than a dozen people were driven out, and many more lost a house of worship that is a home in the distance. We are deeply grateful that our residents are safe and that the fire was included before it could spread further in this densely built neighborhood. “
