Eastern Kentucky Health Leader offers tips for the safety of flood bars

Flooding can have health risks. Standing flood can contain human waste or garbage that is filled with contaminants or bacteria. This can cause infections or gastric intestine diseases. It is also possible to tear down and be hurt mud.

Scott Lockard is the director of the public health system of the Ministry of Health at Kentucky River District, which serves six southeastern Kentucky Counties. He says it is important to wear protective material during cleaning.

“Only universal precautions, you know, wear protective equipment, gloves and face cover,” said Lockard. “If you have a little pressure to wash off something, make sure that you use a cover over your eyes and face to prevent any overspray from getting into your mouth and so on.”

He says that floods can also exert mental health and are not shy if you stimulate.

“We interviewed many people after the floods of 2022, and many of them reported back,” he said.

Lockard says he should reach a provider of mental health or a therapist if necessary. He also says that he should call 988 if he goes through a crisis for mental health.
