Custer County, Mont. – A train with coal was derailed late Monday evening west of Miles City, in which between 25 and 27 cars were involved.

Custer County Emergency Response teams arrived quickly at the scene and coordinated the efforts with the BNSF Railway. The cause of the derailment, which took place on February 24, 2025 around 11:00 p.m., is currently being examined.

Cory Cheguis, fire chief of Custer County, says that no injuries were reported at that time. Emergency crews are on site and first ratings are carried out to better understand the full scope of the situation.

“Our priority is to evaluate potential environmental effects and to manage the security of the area in the course of the situation,” said Cheguis.
