Officials have published search photos and new details on Diogenes Archangel Ortiz, The shooter that stormed into the UPMC Memorial Hospital accepted the ICU employees as hostageand shot several people – including killed West York Borough Officer Andrew Duarte.

The criminal background of the shooter discovered

Court files show that Archangel-Ortiz had a violent story, including a domestic attack in 2016, in which he hit his girlfriend in his head with a wine glass while he was intoxicated.

  • October 2016, the neighbor called the police after calling Archel-Portiz, “I will kill you B ***” before attacking his girlfriend at the time. According to the police, she suffered a bloody head injury.
  • In 2016 protection against abuse (PFA) – After his arrest, the victim submitted a PFA arrangement against him, against which he later violated.
  • Squipment 2017 – owe guilty of Pfa violation and harassment. Sentenced to 3 to 6 months in the York County prison.

Officials released two new searches for Erzengel-Aktiz-A from his booking from 2016 for the Pfa violation and another from 2017 when he was arrested in the York County Prison.

What happened to the UPMC Memorial?

On February 22, 2025, Erzel-Ortiz entered the UPMC Memorial Hospital with a bag with a semi-automatic pistol and a zipper binding. He entered the intensive care unit, kept the employees hostage and shot three UPMC employees – a doctor, a nurse and a custodian bank.

When the police arrived, Erzengel-Ortiz held an employee with a gun held before the officials opened the fire and killed him.

Three officers were shot in an exchange, including the police officer of West York Borough, Andrew Duarte, who later died of his injuries.

The death of the shooter confirmed by the forensic doctor

According to the Coroner's Office of the York County, Archangel-Ortiz was declared dead at 4:58 p.m. in the UPMC Memorial Hospital. His next relative was notified.

The forensic doctor's office confirmed that the deputy medical professional Michelle Rau and the deputy coroner Tania Zech reacted to the scene and that Archangel-Portiz was dead in the hospital. An autopsy is planned for Tuesday, February 25th, in the Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown to determine the exact cause and type of death.

Motif still unknown

The authorities have not officially published a motif, but an UPMC employee has published online that he had recently informed Erzengel-Ormen-Portiz that a loved one had died.

Further details are expected if the investigators continue to check the history of the shooter and possible motifs behind the hospital attack that a community left in mourning.
