New York prison strikes occur day 10

Albany, NY (WCAX) – It is the 10th day of illegal strikes in prisons across New York, and governor Kathy Hochul asks the corrections to re -spend the workers.

“We need you back to work; This must end immediately, ”said Governor Hochul.

The employees have equipped outside institutions, including 4 in our region, to recall the posture law that regulates things like solitary confinement.

According to Governor Hochul, her office offered employees an amnesty period and suspended part of the Stockstell Act. Now she says that someone who is striking is absent without vacation.

“The detained population was unguarded. There were people from other unions, people who work in the healthcare system and the commissioner who were unprotected by these actions, ”she said.

Last week, the governor used 6,500 members of the National Guard in prisons.

She says that these strokes will lose health services for state health, and the unions will not cover legal representation, since the strikes are not sanctioned unionized. Hochul says she understands the long hours and the persistent working conditions, but wants everyone to return to work.

Senator Dan Stec pushes back the governor's statements and says that he is shocked that Hochul does not know the seriousness of the security concerns in prisons.

“Their disregard for the security of the civil servants in recent years has led to the conditions that caused this current crisis in our correctional facilities,” said Senator Stec in a statement.

He later says that Hochul should listen to striking COS and take measures to lift the holding and make the safety of the prison priority. ”
