Governor Desantis supports the termination of property taxes in Florida

It would make Florida the first state in the country to take this step

Ron Desantis, Governor of Florida, recently expressed his support for the elimination of property taxes in his state, a step that would make Florida the first state of the nation to do this if he is successful. However, critics argue that property taxes are a decisive source of financing for local governments.

“Is it your property or not? You basically pay the government to live on your own property”

Property taxes help finance important local services, including schools, streets, parks and emergency services such as police and fire brigades.

Fentrice Driskell, House Minister leader, expressed concerns about the proposal and said: “This is something else that sounds like a very sexy idea, but in practice it would actually devastate our local communities.”

After governor Ron Desantis had experienced the idea, Senator Jonathan Martin, R-Fort Myers, submitted a legislative template last week to investigate the elimination of property taxes.

The Republicans in Florida have introduced two proposals in connection with property taxes by Tuesday. One would commission a study to evaluate the effects of elimination of land taxes, while the other increase the liberation of the state of $ 50,000 to $ 75,000 per year.

“We have to have a balanced budget,” said Esteban Leonardo Santis, a policy analyst at the Florida Policy Institute. “If you eliminate an important source of income, you must either make cuts to take this into account, or you have to increase taxes elsewhere.”

A potential alternative is to increase the state's sales tax. According to the Florida Policy Institute, Florida would have to replace around 43 billion US dollars if the property taxes were eliminated.

Governor Desantis himself admitted that it would accept a constitutional amendment to eliminate basic taxes.
