Southern Utah snowpack hits record low

Salt Lake City – Southern Utah has historically low snow cover and begins to see extreme drought conditions.

The hydrologist of the National Weather Service, Glen Merrill, said, while the snow packaging in north -utah or above the normal value is fighting south -utah.

“The drainage of Santa Clara near the area of St. George in Washington County is currently only 13% of the normal value,” said Merrill.

According to Merrill, reservoirs are located on or above the normal level in the whole of the state, which could help a little, but the current weather conditions could make the drought conditions worse.

“The continuation of the warmer as normal and drier than normal temperature and precipitation conditions only exacerbate the persistent drought that you experience.”

Merrill said that there is a random monsoon weather pattern to Utah this year because the low snow cover could cause fall floods in summer.
