Wyoming Grizzlies could wake up every day, will Grizzly 399s Cub Show?

Wyoming could be just a few days before the first sighting of a grizzly that emerges from hibernation this year – but nobody knows when or even when Grizzly will show 399 Cub.

The well -known Grizzly photographer Tom Mangelssen gave the prediction that March 8 will be the day on which the first grizzly will be discovered.

The wildlife photographer Debbie Dixon from Gardiner, Montana, gave a somewhat later predicted date.

“If this continues, it could be earlier than you think. I predict March 15, ”she said.

A bear that many wildlife observers will search for is Spirit, the last young animal of Wyoming's beloved Grizzly 399.

March grizzly madness

Other wildlife photographers and a biologist did not indicate any precise data, but agreed that the Grizzly season would probably start in early March.

“I would suspect that the first boar (male bears) will appear in the north of Yellowstone in early March. Perhaps in the ponds in which Bison falls through the ice, ”said Wyoming Wildlife photographer Jorn Vangoidsenhoven.

Last year the first official grizzly view was switched on March 13th in Yellowstone National Park. The first grizzly of the season in the Teton area was seen and photographed on March 23, 2024.

A lonely grizzly was discovered by Wyoming Game and Fish staff about two weeks ago, in which moose herds were observed by an aircraft, Dan Thompson, Game and Fish Large carnivores, said Cowboy State Daily.

However, this was probably a “unique event”, no indication that grizzlies came out of hibernation, he added.

As Thompson and other bear biologists told the cowboy state daily, grizzlies can take their caves out of their caves for a short time At all times in winter.

March is the month in which grizzlies emerge from their caves in the highlands, he said. But they will only come into force later.

“We should expect a couple to split up in March, but the mass exodus will only take place in April and May,” said Thompson.

The first spring without 399

In recent years, the first sighting of Wyoming's most famous bear, Grizzly 399, has been a highlight of spring. And in May 2023 her global fan base became wild, as She appeared with a new young animal.

This Cub was called Spirit by Mangelssen – which probably took more photos than any other of Grizzly 399 and its various Cubs over the years.

The spirit was supposed to be Grizzly 399 at the end of October 22, 2024 when it was Punched and killed by a vehicle South of Jackson.

Since then, the spirit has not been seen – although many believe that the Cub had a good chance of survival because it was almost old enough to strike out.

Will Spirit show again?

The boy's gender was never officially determined, but most people describe the spirit as “he” and suspects that his gigantic size indicates that it is a man.

If the spirit survived the winter, the gender of the young bear could determine when or whether it was seen again.

Although male grizzlys normally arise earlier as women, they tend to avoid busy areas such as road edges.

“Spirit is a difficult question, I am not sure whether someone will certainly recognize the young animal because it is alone,” said Vangoidsenhoven.

“And when it turns out that it is a boar, he can disappear in the hinterland,” he added.

The wildlife photographer Isabella Smedley told the Cowboy State Daily that she adheres to the hope that the mind will reappear.

“I stop my breath for this young animal. I hope it's a woman, so we can see her. If it is a boy and he has survived, we won't see him for very long, I think, ”she said.

But even a male young animal grizzly 399 could follow the habit of his mother to hang out in the public eye, added Smedley.

“On the other hand, 399 was quite visible everywhere, so it is everyone guessing what the Cub will do,” she said.

Mangel said he was doubtful that the spirit would show.

“I will be surprised when the spirit is seen again,” he said.

If 399's last Cub appears, the competition for the first photo of the mind will probably be violent.

Dixon said Cowboy State Daily that the sum is running over spirit.

“I think there will be people around the clock just to look for him,” she said.
