Streaming services experiment with TV publication plans

Since the decline in linear television, streaming platforms with the challenge have been recorded to pave their own way with a new structure. This includes creating a new option for publishing television programs and what works best for every show.

The streaming service Netflix has tried to have the experience of its viewers as well as possible with the release time plans of the television show. The company is known to publish shows in two formats: suddenly or on a rolling schedule.

Other services such as Paramount+ are similar and publish some shows weekly, while other show episodes are released at once. Hulu and Prime Video also have a schedule for show publications, with mainly publishing shows that are still broadcast and cannot be made available to the public at the same time, similar to linear television.

Shows are published differently in services like Peacock. The third season of “The Traitors” began in January 2025 with a three-episode publication as a premiere. After that, the episodes were published every week and will continue until the end of the season.

Other platforms such as Disney+, HBO Max and Amazon Prime release show weekly because they encourage the audience to keep their services until the end of the show.

Some Marvel shows such as “Loki”, “Wandavision” and “Falcon and the Winter Soldier” on Disney+ are released weekly on Thursday evening. Although some of these shows didn't have many episodes, the weekly strategy was still successful.

Streaming services also have another release option with shows such as “Stranger Things” and “The Crown”, in which seasons are released in two parts. Netflix began publishing shows with Split Seasons because of the Hollywood strikes in 2023 in 2020.

The Split season model continues to be tested, whereby Netflix shows such as “Bridgerton” measure its success with the spectators.

Prime Video also followed the same strategy with its animated show “Invincible”. The service published the first three episodes on February 6th before switching to a weekly publication plan. The second season was released in two parts, but the third season brought the show back into the original programming.

The creator of the show, Robert Kirkman, said he prefers this.

“I think the publication plan in which we are in ourselves is much more what we can expect in the future, in contrast to the publication plan that we were between season 1 and 2,” Kirkman told the discussion about the film.

The change in the streaming release time plans was created due to the number of streaming services available. The spectators like to see things at certain times, in certain seasons and on different devices. The publication of television programs has contributed strongly to see people at any time what they want.

Since then, Netflix has been the place for spectators to Binge watch shows due to the publication of the entire seasons at once. The spectators can see so much or so little of their favorite shows when the full season drops. The spectators also have a higher chance of observing the entire season.

However, it is common for Netflix -Reality shows to be released weekly to build excitement and keep the audience interested.

In other cases, platforms license shows that are currently published on television are published. The services have no control when the episodes are broadcast and have to wait for the transmitter to release everyone first.

Managers such as Bela Barjaria, Chief Content Officer from Netflix, have found that the publication of regular shows Weekly is no better for the commitment of the audience.

“There is no data that is better this weekly support, and it is not so good for a consumer experience,” said Bajaria at a college right event.

The Vice President of Strategy at a data analysis company Conviva, Nick Cicero, also commented.

“(Binge-Watching) enables customers to consume at their own pace, but is based on a deep catalog,” Cicero told CNBC.

According to Axios data, the turning point was in 2019 when weekly publications exceed the Binge releases. This implies that part of the popularity for the binge watching of a show is due to the novelty.

Netflix also suggested that its large volume of slightly available television programs helped the company during the pandemic because it was difficult to create new media when everyone looked more television.

Although there is no conclusive evidence to determine which publication style is better, streaming services will continue to find out what works best for you. Each new option will continue to be observed and checked by your loyal audience.
