Newport says, leaky sewage tube under Yaquina Bay has now been repaired • YachateNews.com

Newport – A sewage pipe that runs under Yaquina Bay, which was set two months ago and is no longer involved in the bay, the city of Newport said on Wednesday.

City of Newport Newport Public Works and Contractor Crews work on repairs on a broken pipe near the Hatfield Marine Science Center, which it could flow to Yaquina Bay for two months.

The whistle runs between the area of the East Science Drive near the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Yaquina Bay to the Southeast Bay Boulevard. While the water had been treated with chlorine, city officials said in December that it could still be dangerous for human health.

The city said that a 30 -foot pipeline had been replaced during the repair. Due to the size of the pipeline, custom parts and pipes had to be ordered and manufactured before the repair could begin.

“We were able to successfully repair the pipeline last weekend and monitor their stability and functionality this week,” said Robert Moser, director of public work by Newport Public Works, in a press release.

Newport said it worked with several state agencies to ensure that the wildlife or the ecosystem had no effect due to the leak to Yaquina Bay.

The city said that a weld seam over the pipeline in 2022 failed on December 28th, which led to a separation of the pipe, which led to the distraction of the treated wastewater from Newport's wastewater treatment plant into Yaquina Bay on Bayfront and in South Beach.
