What changed for pensioners

Some state and urban governments, including Louisiana, did not pay any social security taxes for the pensions for their public service employees. Many of these employees stopped jobs before or after their public service or worked on second jobs – such as those who often accept teachers at night and in summer – and contributed to social security.

The WEP determination adopted and mentioned in 1983 reduces the social security benefits by up to half of the pension amount for people who receive pension income from jobs that did not contribute to social security.

The GPO adopted and mentioned in 1977 reduces the services for survivors if the spouse had a pension that was not taxed for social security. The social security benefits can be reduced by up to two thirds of the pension of the public employee.
