The residents of Darlington make concerns about broken fire hydrants

Darlington, SC (WPDE) – City officials in Darlington say that 11 fire hydrants do not work in the city and that they are not repaired for several weeks.

Some of the hydrants are missing and are now repaired, while some of them are only missing.

ABC15 spoke to a stylist in a hairdressing salon that was never said by officials that the fire hydrant on the other side of the street had to be repaired.

Shannon's beauty salon is directly opposite a missing fire hydrant on the other side of the street. ABC15 asked hairdresser Baker Pickens in the salon if they were told that the hydrant did not work.

“No, I wasn't and we have been here for 2 years, that's really surprising,” said Pickens.

There are over 300 fire hydrants in the city of Darlington. Some of them are being worked on while some are not there at all.

In the Smith Street, where a hydrant should be, a traffic cone is located in its place. There are a few other locations like this in the city.

Mayor Curtis Boyd said that Darlington's city council recently ordered certain parts that are necessary for the repair of some hydrants.

He said that several hydrants have been down for some time.

“It continues – some of them have been missing for several years in which we have tried to be repaired and urged to finish,” said Mayor Boyd.

He adds that the parts ordered for the hydrants will take some time to come here, so the residents of Darlington City are waiting.

“Our residents are currently safe and shouldn't have any problems,” said Mayor Boyd.

Although no problems have been reported, pickens believe that the salon should be aware of, especially with hot devices that are used for hair.

“I have the feeling that we definitely need to know – I think it's pretty serious,” said Pickens.

Mayor Boyd said that the fire hydrants are inspected annually and all 11 hydrants in the city should be determined until early spring.
