North Carolina Rice Festival events start next week

Leland, NC (Wect) – An annual festival that celebrates the history of the Cape Fear region begins in Leland next week.

The North Carolina Rice Festival will take place on March 8 after several events in front of the festival. From March 5, the organizers will hold the “Introduction … the NC Rice Festival event” for newcomers in the region to understand the role of rice in the Gullah Geechee culture.

After the introduction, an event for Ancestry will take place on March 6, and an inauguration of the Reaves Chapel on March 7, a religious center and hub for the Gullah Geechee communities at the end of the 19th century.

The North Carolina Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Gala will take place on March 7th in the Leland Cultural Arts Center.

The line -up closes with the all -day rice festival at the historical location Brunswick/Fort Anderson.

“This event location is surrounded by some of the largest former rice plantations in the district and offers an excellent location for celebrations and reflection on the dual issues of the rice festival”, wrote the organizers on the website of the North Carolina Rice Festival.

The participants can take advantage at the Gullah Geechee Community Riverwalk and live live appearances and presentations by Daniel Jones, the cultural curator of the Cameron Art Museum of Wilmington, last year's headliner Shea Ra Nichi and the cultural ensemble and much more.
