Health officials share tips on the prevention of measles

Putnam County, W.Va. (Wsaz) – A person was reported with measles in Frankfort, Kentucky, and Dr. Samia Turner was concerned about the potential effects of a virus that had not been reported since 2023.

“Doctors who are at my age and younger did not have to deal with it. I mean, we haven't really trained how to deal with these diseases. Now you are getting more in front and it's quite scary, ”said Turner.

Turner is the health officer in Putnam County, West Virginia. She said that a child who recently dies in measles in Texas draws concerns with a virus that can be avoided with vaccines in childhood.

“It is a very serious problem, especially in states that have reduced their requirements for these child vaccines,” said Turner.

According to local officers, the adult spent time with measles in Kentucky in a gym after he had returned from an international trip. According to the gymnast, measles is very contagious and it is the best way to be safe to look for traveling with your doctor before traveling.

Turner said the best way to check for measles is to be tested, but cough, sneezing and fever are just a few of the symptoms.

“The rash is a kind of symptom that you will see, and often it is a sore throat and like in the mouth you will see a rash.”

In view of the concerns of people about the spread of measles in our region, Dr. Turner not that people panic.

“You will be more concerned about someone who is in the same room as it is contagious. If you were, you know a state away, I wouldn't get worried, ”she said.

Turner said that if you come into contact with the measles, you should have immunity if all of your vaccines are up to date.
