Outside schools that take part in the Flx/NY State History Day again – Finger Lakes Daily News

For the first time in years, students of Finger Lakes Area schools will take part in regional and nationwide competitions that celebrate history.

Students in grades 6-12 from schools in the counties in Cayuga, Ontario, Seneca, Wayne and Yates will take part in the day of the history of Finger Lake History. Finger Lakes History Day is part of the National History Day, who is a one -year educational program with which the students can explore the local, state and national history.

Kate Grindstaff is the regional coordinator for the Finger Lakes region, which consists of the counties Cayuga, Ontario, Seneca, Wayne and Yates. She told Finger Lakes News Radio that the Finger Lakes region was the only region in the state for several years that did not participate.

“For many years we have actually been the only region that students did not take part in the entire state. So it is really exciting to bring it back.”

In September, Grindstaff turned to schools to give the students enough time, and in some cases entire classes to develop their projects. For the competition, she said that the students select a historical research topic in connection with the national topic – “Rights and Responsibility in History” for this year – for months to research their topic in order to create a project that is to be assessed in the regional competition.

“You go to libraries, museums, archives … and then after you have interpreted what you have found, you have to create a project that is assessed in the actual competitive event.”

According to Grindstaff, the projects can be everything from a paper or a document to a website, performance or exhibition.

On March 15, students from the Finger lakes in the Perc (Case Mansion) gather in Auburn to assess their projects by a body of local historians and teachers from the region. The two best projects in each category will then pass the state competition for the end of April at Suny Oneonta.

Grindstaff added that the students have the opportunity to revise their projects between local and state competitions based on the feedback of the regional judges.

While Grindstaff is enthusiastic that the region will take part again with five countries, she hopes to expand more students and schools in the region. When students, school officers or teachers are interested in participating in the competition next year, they will be asked to contact Grindstaff [email protected].
