The husband of the city council of Coachella, Yadira Perez, was arrested by the US immigration and customs authorities (ICE) on a Walmart parking lot. Perez, who was elected to the Council last year, resigned from her post as a deputy of the sheriff department of the Riverside County.

The federal authorities confirmed that Perez 'husband, the 51-year-old Isidro Jimenez, is a Mexican citizen who had previously been deported for sale in 1995 after a conviction for the possession of methamphetamine, as the Palm Springs Desert Sun reports.

ICE explained that Jimenez had illegally joined the United States and accumulated additional criminal convictions, including domestic violence in 1998, several DUIS and an attack with a fatal weapon in 2023.

The time of arrest has raised questions from some parishioners and political observers, as NBC Palm Springs emphasizes. The choice of Perez shifted the balance of power in Coachella's city government and led to the arrest of her husband politically motivated. Others argue that it was a routine enforcement measure, since Jimenez 'criminal history and earlier deportation.

Jimenez was taken into custody and initially held in a detention center in the San Bernardino district. Although he was later released in bond, the public prosecutor has requested a review of this decision. His legal status remains uncertain when the legal proceedings are continued.

Coachella, which has been known as Sanctuary City since 2017, limits the cooperation with the implementation of the federal immigration. However, Mayor Steven Hernandez has clarified the desert sun of Palm Springs that local politics does not prevent federal agents from acting within the city limits. “We should continue to know the residents and know immigrants what their rights are,” said Hernandez. “But we have neither the power nor the authority to prevent ice or the FBI from doing these actions.”
