Tips from Valley Doctor to avoid macular degeneration

Fresno, California (KFSN) – Our eyes give us a clear view of the world.

This vision can be blurred over time.

“The macular degeneration is a acquired degeneration of the macula,” says Dr. Neesurg Mehta. “When we get older, the center of the retina can be damaged and people can start losing their central view.”

Macular degeneration can make everyday tasks such as reading and shopping.

According to the National Health Institute, the disease affects 200 million people worldwide, and this number is expected to increase to 300 million by 2040.

It is a problem with which Dr. Mehta works to deal with the Eye Medical Center in the northeast of Fresno

“I think, especially when the baby boomer generation gets older, we see a lot of it, especially here in Central Valley,” he said. “About half of my clinic only deals with macular degeneration”

Various seeing is one of the main symptoms of macular degeneration.

Dr. Mehta says that our genetic history and age drive the disease. There are other factors that can lead to this.

“If you have uncontrollable diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases, cholesterol,” he said.

Although there is no healing for macular degeneration, doctors say that a healthier lifestyle can reduce our risk.

“The most avoidable risk factor is smoking,” said Dr. Mehta. “Smoking will cause this to get much faster.”

If you regularly see an ophthalmologist and get an early diagnosis, you can prevent macular degeneration and keep your future in focus.
