The US representative Jill Tokuda (HI-02) led the Hawai'i congress delegation to do without Fema region 9 on the collection of rent for fair market of survivors of the Maui fires that take part in the Direct Housing Program. It is currently expected that survivors will receive their first rent bill on March 1 and will make the decision on the rental amount by March 11, 2025.

MP Tokuda and the letter from the Hawai'i congress delegation require a blanket to cover the survivors of Maui, which are already struggling with the high cost of living and the challenges of the economic recovery of Maui. Survivors should also submit an objection to Fema rent decisions by their recertification consultant.

“Too many of our Maui -o -ohana had to make the heartbreaking decision to leave Maui and even the state due to the high cost of living and continuing challenges in economic recovery,” said Rep. Tokuda. “These costs from March 1 could be the break point for hundreds of families who are still trying to rebuild their houses and work on establishing economic stability by restarting their business and finding jobs. The law gives Fema the authority to do without the collection of rent for fair markets, and in the past they have done this in places like Louisiana. Everything we ask is the same consideration so that our employees can concentrate on recovery and reconstruction. “
