Parkersburg – A free structure in the Lynn Street was demolished on Friday after a fire on Thursday evening.

No injuries in the fire in the Lynn St. 1417 were reported, to which the Parkersburg fire brigade reacted on Thursday at 7.42 p.m., said fire chief Jason Matthews.

The crews found a fire on the first floor of the building, which Matthews described as a former duplex, which had been placed.

“It has been free for some time”, “ he said.

One crew made an internal attack and another crew entered another door and was able to hit it from another place, said Matthews. The fire was limited to a room directly in the front door, in which a couch burned that was set as a point of origin, said Matthews.

The fire was spent within 30 minutes. Matthews said the room suffered “Significant damage.”

“We could contain it in this area”, “ he said.

The building had not connected any supply companies.

The crews searched the building and found no one there.

“Before we arrived, we had reported that there were people who left the structure.” he said.

The exact cause of the fire is indefinite. Matthews said they still don't know if it was deliberately hired or accidental.

The mayor of Parkersburg, Tom Joyce, said the building was “In the past six months, homeless house occupiers have been cleared several times.”

“Officially, it will be indefinite, but anyone who licks common sense can reasonably come to the conclusion that the vagrants that have been stored several times were either deliberately or accidentally determined.” he said.

The fire brigade reacted with 16 firefighters, four engines, the driver's car, the Tower Truck, the ambulance and the command vehicle. The crews cleared the scene around 9:45 p.m.

The examination continues.

Joyce said the building was demolished as part of the city's latest termination contract. The city engineer Adam Stout considered it unsafe on Friday morning, so it was moved to emergency termination status.

“(The) increased costs still have to be determined, but it will be significant” Said Joyce.

“At some point someone is injured or killed, and that is the main reason why we have to keep the course when we approach over 450 structures that have been called up since I took office in 2017.” he said.

Joyce said Matthews and Code Enforcement Director Andy Nestor work together to identify high -risk structures that need to be tackled.
