The voters in Florida were able to abolish governors with lieutenant governor post

The voters in Florida would be asked to eliminate the position of the governor of the lieutenant and to create a new cabinet position in accordance with a constitutional change submitted on Thursday.

The proposal (HJR 1325) would create a “commissioner of government efficiency” and the commissioner would give the authority to “examine, investigate and report fraud, waste and abuse” in the executive department as well as in local governments and special districts.

The majority leader of the house majority, Tyler Sirois, R-Merritt Iceland, and Rep. John Snyder, R-Stuart, submitted the proposal for examination during the legislative session, which begins on Tuesday. If the legislature is approved, it would go to the ballot 2026.

The proposal comes when the state has a position in the governor Lieutenant after Jeanette Nunez resigned to the Interim President of Florida International University last week. Governor Ron Desantis has announced that he will wait until the legislative session to appoint a successor to Nunez.
