ATV Road usage regulations for the ballot paper for the day of the city assembly in Highgate

Highgate, vt. (WCAX) – Vermont Towns rely on the ballot for the day of the city meeting.

“We talked to you about a prescription, they said well if they really wanted it. You probably have to ask for it, so we did it, ”said Ray Laroche from Highgate.

Laroche is part of an ATV group called “The Recycled Teenagers”. He described it as a few old timers who drove together on the back streets, and he says he wants to do more. He was the one who asked the Highgate Selectboard to put a regulation on the ballot this year, and he hopes that people are right.

“Well, I wanted to be able to do something and do something. We have always been motorcyclists in the past twenty -five years. It has only become so scary on the streets. I thought that if we were on the backroads and trails, it would be safer, ”said Laroche.

The city of Highgate has already had the debate, and ATVs are actually approved on certain streets in the city.

But this time the voters will decide whether ATVs can drive on all streets. According to the Vermont ATV Sportsman's Association, four other cities will take on the topic this year. Waterford, Danby, Fletcher and Orwell.

“For us and our research, we have a lot to do with the fact that we come out of the Covid 19 pandemic that we almost doubled the registered ATVs, the accession clubs and our department of our association,” Tommy O'Connor/Vasa Executive Director:

According to officials, they are not necessarily against more ATVs on the streets, but others have some concerns.

Carrie Johnson/Interim Highgate Town Administrator: “Make sure things are safe for everyone involved. ATVs can be loud, but there are also respectful travelers. It may require more supervision and enforcement of the Sheriffs department. “

The Vermont ATV Sportsman's Association (VASA) says if cities need help to find ways to enforce the regulation, they can be used as a resource.
