US firefighters in Carolinas in the middle of dry air, gusty winds devastating forest fires

South Carolina, USA:

Firefighters in the North and South Carolina of the United States fought dozens of forest fires at the weekend and caused the authorities to evacuate some residents. The flames were driven by dry weather, gusty winds and unusually high temperatures.

The largest fire burned 1,200 acres near the coastal town of Myrtle Beach until Sunday. In addition, the US national weather service warned of an increased risk of fire in the region due to a combination of critically dry fuels and very low relative humidity.

Firefighters showed dramatic videos from South Carolina who fought against flames when the fire approached the houses. So far, no injuries have been reported, according to the American media reports.

The new blazes come a month after devastating flames in Los Angeles, of which they are expected to be the most expensive in US history. Some expected losses of up to 35 billion US dollars.

South Carolina

In South Carolina, where more than 175 fires burned 6.6 square miles by 17 square kilometers, governor Henry McMaster has explained an emergency to support the reaction efforts of the forest fires after the civil servants had declared a nationwide burning ban. The governor said that the burning ban would remain indefinitely.

In the meantime, firefighters have made some progress in containing a fire in the Carolina Forest Area, west of Myrtle Beach, where the residents had been instructed several districts, according to Horry County Rescue.

Video from the area showed some people who left their houses when smoke filled the sky. In the late Sunday afternoon, however, the fire brigade announced that Carolina Forest could return home evacuated.

On Sunday evening, the South Carolina Forestry Commission estimated that the fire had burned 2.5 square miles (6.5 square kilometers), with 30 percent of them.

“There were no structures to the fire, and no injuries were reported by Sunday morning,” said officials.

North Carolina

In North Carolina, the US Forest Service said that firefighting teams contain several forest fires in four forests across the state.

The largest flame, about 400 acres (162 hectares), was about 80.47 kilometers east of Charlotte in the Uwharrie National Forest. The forest service said on Sunday afternoon that it had made progress in the fire and reached about a third of the containment.

The small southwestern city of Tryon in Polk County, North Carolina, asked some residents to evacuate on Saturday because a fire spread quickly there. The evacuations remained in force on Sunday. A decision about whether it should lift it should be made on Monday after deliberate burns are supposed to try to prevent the fire from spreading.

According to the Polk County Emergency Management/Fire Marshal's Office, this fire burned about 202 hectares (202 hectares) with containment of zero percentages.

The North Carolina Forest Service carried out water waste on site, and the residents of the region should expect a lot of smoke during these operations, the officials said.

Officials did not say what caused the fires.
