Here is the reason why it is time to strengthen Florida's term limitation laws

Between 1983 and 2021, Michael Madigan spoke for 36 years as the spokesman for the House of Representatives in Illinois. After Madigan was found guilty for 10 cases of corruption before a federal court, he will serve a different kind of term – one in which the only voices that are important for who gets the top bunk.

As a Madigan, he should be a warning story for those who still complain about Florida's term of office. While Illinois has never had an office limit, Florida's constitution limits the members of our state house or Senate to not more than eight years in a row. This law was passed directly by our people in 1992 – not the politician – with 77% of the votes. It protects us from career politicians such as Madigan, who, if she handed over a long term of office, drunk and start using it for personal profits.

Madigan is also not an anomaly. In 2016, Sheldon Silver, the 21-year-old spokesman for New York, was imprisoned for a complex bribe because he had installed more than $ 5 million. At the beginning of this year, the long -time Senator of New Jersey, Bob Menendez, received an eleven -year prison sentence for the acceptance of Goldbars in return for improper help for foreign governments. Careerism and corruption always went hand in hand.

Due to the conceptual limits, scandals of this size and complexity do not occur in Florida. Of course we are not free of corruption. That would invent the new invent of human nature. However, we use term limits to check the term and arrogance that enable corruption to thrive.

Since the spokesman for the Florida House only exercises for two years, we deprive them of building empires. Since the legislator is only eight years old, we bring them back to the private sector before putting puts into their behavior.

In the upcoming legislative period in Tallahassee, our legislators have the chance to make our good boundary law even better. The joint resolution 536 in the Senate introduced by Senator Blaise Ingoglia would replace the consecutive eight -year -old limit with a lifelong eight -year limit.

At the moment, the state representatives and senators in Florida are forced to take off after eight years (in total 16 years when they serve in the house and in the Senate). But you can take a break and come back. Sometimes this break is miserably short. This year Senator Debbie Mayfield will also run for the Senate again this year after he is limited in November. As early as 2015, Tampa Rep. Jamie Grant Bizarry claimed that his term of office had been reset after only 169 days. If the term limited law has gaps, search for power such as Mayfield and Grant will try to use advantages.

Governor Ron Desantis and the secretary of the full -back Byrd recently brought this struggle before the state's Supreme Court, and argued that the term should restrict the law that the excessive ambitious politician such as Mayfield and Grant should be written. Unfortunately, the court did not agree.

That is exactly why we have to exist SJR 536. It would restrict these abuse and at the same time create legislation that really works for people. The legislation could just as well be referred to as the “Ending Career Politicinider Act” because it will finally get rid of the bums.
