With the Oscar winner there is no other country and where you can see it | Occupied West Bank News

No other country, the settler violence and the Israeli demolition of the Palestinian houses in the occupied West Bank, won the Oscar for the best documentary on Sunday evening.

The film has won dozens of prizes since its publication last year, including the Berlin Film Festival and the New York Film Critics Circle Awards.

Here is more about the film, which is brought together by Palestinian and Israeli filmmakers and why the victory is important:

What is the film about?

The film was produced from 2019 to 2023 and mainly includes personal camcorder film materials, which were filmed by the Palestinian activist Basel Adra (28), which documents the destruction of his hometown Masafer Yatta by the Israeli military in a small, rough region in south.

The film shows the Israeli demolition of houses in the village that wants to transform the Israeli military into a military training zone. His film material shows that the Israeli military does a school and fills water wells with cement so that the residents cannot rebuild.

Adra made the film with the Israeli journalist Yuval Abraham, who, together with the Palestinian filmmaker Hamdan Ballal and the Israeli filmmaker Rachel Szor, led him.

During his Oscar acceptance speech on Sunday evening in Los Angeles, ADRA said that his film “reflects the hard reality that we have endured for decades and still resist when we call up the world to take serious measures to stop the injustice and to stop the ethnic cleaning of the Palestinian people”.

“About two months ago I became a father, and my hope for my daughter is that she doesn't have to live the same life that I now live.”

Abraham said in his speech: “When I look at Basel, I see my brother. But we are unequal. We live in a regime in which I am free under civil law and Basel is among military laws that destroy the lives that he cannot control, ”he said.

The film was released months after fatal Hamas attacks in South Israel on October 7, 2023, which triggered Israel's war against Gaza.

At least 1,100 people were killed in the attacks in Israel, and about 240 people were captured. When a ceasefire came into force in Gaza on January 19, more than 48,000 Palestinians were killed in the war. An estimated 13,000 additional people are buried under the ruins and applies to dead. Law groups have accused Israel of committing genocide.

Where can you not watch any other country

Studios and distributors in the United States have refused to pick up the film. Even online streaming platforms in the United States have not shown any interest, although no other country is the highest awakened Oscar-nominated documentary.

Last year, the online streaming giant Netflix removed 24 Palestinian films from the archive and raised allegations that Hollywood and the US media are dividing Palestinian voices.

Abraham told the New York Times in an interview published on February 19: “In the USA, so many people write us: 'How can we see it?' So we decided to publish the theater publication independently of each other, and it is now shown in about 100 cinemas in the United States. “

He added that he hopes that a dealer would pick up his documentary.

Streaming links are only a few. While there is links to rent or buy the documentary in Amazon UK, Microsoft, Sky Store and AppletV, it is unclear in which regions the documentary is available.

Is this the first time that Palestinians have won an Oscar?

Yes, this is the first time that a Palestinian filmmaker won an Oscar.

In 2006 the film paradise, which the Palestinian director Hany Abu-Assad made, was nominated for an Oscar for the best foreign language film, with the country of origin “the Palestinian areas”. In 2014, Abu-Assad's film Omar was also nominated in the same category. This was the first time that the country of origin in the nomination was given as a Palestine.

Since then, other Palestinian films have been nominated for prices, but not won.

This year, two other Palestinian films were drawn into a closer election alongside no other country, but were not nominated. A collection of 22 films in Gaza was drawn from Ground Zero for the best international film award. An orange from Jaffa underlines the dangers of the Palestinians due to Israeli control points. It was drawn to the short choice for the Live Action category.

So far, four Israelis Oscars have won.

In 2007, a parody of the West Side Story named West Bank Story won in the Live Action Film category. It was created by the Jewish American filmmaker Ari Sandel, whose father is Israeli and mother American.

Why is the victory important?

The victory for no other country comes against the background of the intensification of the Israeli attacks on the occupied West Bank, as the armistice of Gaza came into force. Dozens of Palestinians killed the business in the West Bank and sold more than 40,000 people.

The Israeli Minister of Defense Israel Katz said at the end of January that the Israeli military will use the lessons learned during the Gaza Strip War on their business.

Around three million Palestinians and more than 500,000 Israeli settlers live in the West Bank.

The 1993 Oslo Agreement called for freezing settlements that are illegal under international law, but they have grown quickly since then, especially under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The expansion of settlements has the realization of a two-state solution-a future sovereign Palestinian state that makes it tougher alongside Israel.

Since the inauguration of US President Donald Trump on January 20, further settlements have been announced.
