The Polish space agency examines cyber attacks on their systems

The Poland's Space Agency (Polsa) announced on Sunday that it had suffered a cyber attack and is currently investigating the incident.

In response to the attack, the agency stated that they separate its network from the Internet, and on Monday their website was inaccessible.

The digital minister of Poland, Krzysztof Gawkowski, confirmed that the state cyber security services had recognized unauthorized access to the IT infrastructure of Polsa and secured the affected systems. Cyber specialists are now working on identifying the attackers behind the violation, he added.

The authorities have not announced whether the attack of ransomware groups or politically motivated hackers was carried out. You also have not given any further details about how the hackers have infiltrated the system.

Polsa is the government authority, which is responsible for Poland's room activities. The agency is a member of the European Space Agency (ESA) and monitors the country's contributions to space research and satellite technology.

In January, Gawkowski said that Poland Cyber space was most targeted in the European Union. He led the most of Russia's incidents.

Poland has become a main goal for Pro-Russian hackers due to his military support for Ukraine and his role as a host of Ukrainian refugees. In September, Gawkowski reported that cyber attacks on Poland had doubled since 2023, with over 400,000 incidents recorded in the first half of the last year.

In order to strengthen his defense, Poland announced an investment of 760 million US dollars in cyber security in June.

Space agencies such as Polsa can be attractive destinations for hackers, as they often work with military and secret services. A potential violation by financially or politically motivated hacker-mounded sensitive, defense-related information, satellite operations or classified research results that endanger national security.

One of the latest examples of cyber incidents that aim at space agencies is the attack on Japan's Jaxa. The agency has suffered several cyber incidents since 2016 when it belonged to 200 Japanese companies and research institutes that were allegedly addressed by Chinese military hackers. In 2023, unknown hackers aimed at the agency's network server to possibly have access to its general business. This may have led to violations of communication between the agency and external organizations with which they have confidentiality agreements such as Toyota.
