Wastewater leak spreads stench, illness in Velachery Locality | Chennai News

Clarified – Mani
Chennai: The residents, as well as students and street attempts that drive through the Vijayanagar Street in Velachery, have to enter stinking stagnating water, as the waste water has been out of a man hole for several months.
The problem deteriorated during the monsoon, water entered the area as a waste water. Despite repeated complaints, the problem remains unsolved.
S Harish Kumar, a class X student at a private school, said: “Wastewater has been leaving for a long time. When vehicles drive past, dirty water sprays on our clothes. The smell is terrible and we keep our breath while driving past.”
J Karthik, a resident, said the problem was over six months. “The monsoon made it even worse. The blocked wastewater line prevents the wastewater from properly pumping, which then looks through the man hole. The entire route that leads to the Velachery-Tambaram main road has this problem. It is a nightmare during the rush hours,” he said.
Another resident, R Meena, said the threat to mosquitoes has recently reached its peak in the neighborhood. “My daughters are for the board exams. We cannot make children sick at this point. We asked the authorities several times to spray mosquitoes, but so far nobody has answered,” she said.
When contacting him, a Metrowater said that a private hospital on the route had illegally pumped wastewater water at night. “We have issued a message to you. There is no blockade in the STP line,” he said.
