SS United States Tracker: The historic ocean liner arrives after a long journey from Philadelphia in Mobile, Alabama

Philadelphia (WPVI) – The SS United States made it on Monday through the first stage of its last trip.

The ship made it to Mobile, Alabama on Monday, where it will be preparations for the largest artificial reef in the world.

The crews will spend about six months cleaning and preparing the ship before it is finally sunk from Florida's golf coast.

“There will be teams of more than 30 people on board who pull out all of these dangerous materials.

“The last thing we want to do is to damage the surroundings that we want to help,” Fogg continued.

The 1,800-mile trip from Philadelphia to Alabama is the 401st trip of the ship.

The trip began on February 19, when Ocean Liner South Philadelphia left.

In a few days, the SS United States will sail for their last trip to the south, where it is sunk as an artificial reef off the Florida coast.

The finale of the ship is 20 miles below the coast of Destin, Florida, under 32 kilometers of about 55 meters of water.

Okaloosa County hopes that the ship will become a destination for divers of divers and that fish and other wild animals are attracted as a reef. It won't be the only shipwreck lifestyle you have.

The SS association, baptized in 1952, was once considered a beacon of the American engineering and double as a military ship that was able to wear thousands of troops. On his maiden voyage from New York to France in 1952, it smashed the transatlantic speed record into both directions when it reached an average speed of 36 knots or a little more than 41 km / h (66 km / h).

On this trip, the ship crossed the Atlantic in three days, 10 hours and 40 minutes and defeated the RMS Queen Mary's time by 10 hours. To this day, the SS United States, which is almost as large as the Chrysler building, keep the transatlantic speed record for an ocean tome.

It was originally developed for the transport of troops and was then redesigned to an Ocean Liner with passengers, which included four US presidents and celebrities.

It became a reserve ship in 1969 and later jumped to various private owners who hoped to renovate it, but finally found their plans to be too expensive or poorly determined.
