10,000 applications that on the 3rd day of the schedule of LA. Gator opened is open

Baton Rouge, La. (WAFB) – Louisiana's extended school voucher program in Louisiana is now taking on applications, and over 10,000 people have applied in the first three days.

The program is called Louisiana, which gives all real opportunity to climb (La Gator). It is an expansion of the existing state school voucher system by $ 50 million.

Senator Rick Edmonds of the state wrote the draft law and is the chairman of the education committee.

“We still don't know if we can finance them all, but obviously it will be a very popular program with our parents,” said Edmonds.

Those who receive the Gator scholarship can take this money and use it at a private school.

“Ultimately, we hope that this is a universal program that would mean that all students are justified,” said Edmonds. “Now we would have to find the financing while we move in it.”

This money is not pulled away by public schools. It is an engagement from the state's general fund. As SPARSPREAGE Steven Procopio emphasizes, the financing is affected when they get children out of these public schools.

“Then the state money, the money per creation that the state brings to a local school, will sink because it is largely received a financing of the state, based on a school base,” said Procopio.

However, it could mean lower costs for these schools, and Senator Edmonds said that the public only had to wait.

“We don't know these numbers yet,” said Edmonds. “We will and want to be transparent, but I don't think this will come at the expense of our parents and families at the public school. I don't think so. “

This is only the first phase of LA. Gator. The priority is for students with disabilities or houses that earn less than about 80,000 US dollars. But that's not all that is accepted.

This makes it easier for families who have a lower level of poverty to send their children. But how much remains to be seen, ”said Procopio.

The maximum family that a family can receive is over $ 15,000 per school year for a student with a disability. Applications conclude on April 15.
