The display in Texas sends a clear message about weak football plans

Texas football has zero interest in getting caught up in playing weak non-conference games.

It’s becoming normal in college football for powerhouse programs to try to schedule weak non-conference games in order to not risk a potential playoff spot.

While the logic is understandable, it is also incredibly stupid. It’s insulting to fans. For example, Nebraska coach Matt Rhule went out and publicly declared he doesn’t know why any Big Ten team would play a major non-conference game.

The answer is simple. The fans and it sounds like Texas fans are in good hands.

Texas ad refuses to plan weak schedules.

Chris Del Conte, sports director of Texas, has drawn a line in the sand:

The Longhorns will play important non-conference games, and that won't change.

According to ON3, Del Conte said the following last week during the last week during a Townhall meeting:

“Our brand and I am firmly convinced of this should play the biggest brands in college football because we are the best. We will play the state of Ohio, we will play Michigan. We have just signed a home and-to-home lady. These games are important. With a 12-game playoff, they are important. To play the best.

This is the right step of Texas, and the program deserves to be greeted. I still can't believe that Matt Rhule has run out and said publicly that Big Ten teams who play these games make no sense.

Cowardly. Absolutely cowardly.

Whether you believe it or not, the fans are important, and important non-conference games are something that fan bases drive up.

I was in the game in Wisconsin/Alabama in Madison last year and it was electrical. Madison burned two days in a row. It doesn't matter that the Badgers have lost. It was an epic time.

Huge props to Del Conte to deliver what fans long instead of being weak. This is the energy that we have to see in sports and in this country in general. Let me know what you think David.hookstead@outkick.com.
