Gene Hackman, Betsy Arakawa Death: Gas Company gives updating the results

Almost a week after Gene Hackman and Ms. Betsy Arakawa were found dead in their homeland in Santa Fe, New Mexico, the sheriff department published an update about its investigation.

According to a press release from FOX News Digital Tuesday, the New Mexico Gas Company “confirmed a comprehensive examination for gas leaks and carbon monoxide” on February 26th and made no significant results in the couple's remote home.

The gas company noticed that there was “a minuscres leak (0.33% gas in air – no fatal amount) on one of the oven burners. In addition, there were four “red tags” for violations of the code enforcement, in which “a heating water and gas blocker was installed in three fireplaces”.

“In the early evening of February 26, 2025, the New Mexico Gas Company confirmed a comprehensive examination of the gas leak and carbon monoxide in the house of Gene Hackman,” the press release said.

“There were no significant findings. NMGC spent five (5) red tags. A red day was one of the stove burners for a tiny leak (0.33% gas in air – no fatal amount). The other four red tags were enforced for violations of code – not with gas leaks or carbon monoxide – a message with a water sweater and gas light,, which were included in three shells. “

Adan Mendoza, sheriff of Santa Fe County, confirmed on Friday at a press conference that Hackman and Arakawa were negatively tested for carbon monoxide.

The couple's house was tested on carbon monoxide on February 26, shortly after the corpses were discovered. The Santa Fe City fire brigade released the house after finding no evidence of a carbon monoxide leak or poisoning. The New Mexico Gas Company also replied and found “no signs or evidence” for problems with whistling in or around Hackmans at home.

While Hackman and Arakawa's causes of death were not published, the authorities believe that both were dead for over a week before their bodies were discovered.

“One of the things is that in an examination we try to put the timeline together, usually before the event, and that gives us a lot of information,” said Mendoza during a press conference on Friday. “But in this case it seems as if we carry out a reverse timeline.

“We make a timeline from the time of death and the autopsy and the results. We will work backwards,” he added. “We will do both and then hopefully we will decide what could have happened to both people.”
