Georgia Southern football kicks off camp

STATESBORO, Ga. (WTOC) – It’s a bit earlier than past years due to a new transfer window in April, but spring football is back in Statesboro.

Georgia Southern began a 15-practice stretch on Tuesday that leads up to the spring game scheduled for April 5th. As a group that finished last season less than three months ago, the Eagles feel like they’re sticking in stride.

It’s Clay Helton’s fourth spring as head coach in Statesboro, and the first time that he has a returning quarterback. JC French’s number two receiver in 2024 Josh Dallas is back, and in a larger leadership role. Ryan Aplin is entering his second year as offensive coordinator.

“It’s just fun to get out here and compete together, and it feels like we’re only growing,” Dallas said after practice on Tuesday. “It can feel like you stop, and then you have to pick up, and you take a few steps back. It feels like we’re just climbing, and we’re just getting better, so we’re getting through that together.”

“I think this spring one of the emphasis is eliminating pre-snap mistakes,” said Aplin. “If you’re in the right spot, people are lined up, then you have a shot at having a successful play. If you’re not in the right spot, you don’t have enough. I think on offense, it’s about us. It’s about you, as a collective group, finding a way to continue to grow, but also pushing yourself. I think spring is about making yourself uncomfortable.”

Georgia Southern’s spring game is scheduled for Saturday, April 5th. All spring practices are open to the public, per Clay Helton
