New Trier overcomes a lot to claim the state trophy in third place

New Trier swimmers and divers are organizing a must-performance performance at the state final. So much that head coach Josh Runkle couldn't actually endure to watch her.

Runkle said he was overwhelmed by nerves and emotions in certain places in the meeting and regularly went over the length of the pool deck, keeping an eye on the scoreboard instead of the pool.

He said his actions were the result of a challenging year for the Trevians who fought third place at the IHSA championships against injuries, illnesses and more on Saturday, March 1st in Westmont.

“It was a roller coaster year for us,” said Runkle, whose father died at the beginning of this year to expand the challenges of the season. “It was very difficult for all of us mentally, emotionally and physically. So that we can go out with the third, I am very happy and very proud of these children. They are only hard and really reinforced when they had to. It was astonishing to see. ”

The needs of the Trevians were up to the last contact point of the meeting. Two points behind Lane Tech for third place, New Trier, had to bring a trophy home in the last event, the 400 yard freestyle relay.

The Trevians Charlie Sears, Drennan Devaraj, Caden Carberry and Jared Goldstein undoubtedly left the 10th place to the 15th of the Champions and gave their team third with 156 points.

Hinsdale Central completed a dominant way and scored 338 points in Marmions 190. New Trier ended second place to Centrals earlier two championships.

The Loyola Academy took fifth place behind a third place in the 200 Medley and 400 freely relay as well as in the fourth junior Velizar Filipov fourth in the 100th back and in the 100th butterfly, the Senior Gus Kohs sixth in 100 back and sixth place in the 100 fly, and fly in the 100.

The Trevians received their greatest thrust from Senior Stuart Timmerman, who received a state championship in the 50 -Free and runner in 100 -use in breast swimming. He also helped New Trier in the 200 Medley relay and third place in 200 Free Relay.

Stuart Timmerman, 50-yard freestyle state champion

Timmerman swam 50 free in 20.39 seconds to claim his state championship title, which he has been following for a long time.

“It was just sheer joy,” he said about victory. “This is four years in which I dream of winning a state championship title. It's all I really thought about. It was the craziest to see it on the (scoreboard).

“There is something to win a state championship title here. It always meant a lot, not only for me, but also for the team. It is a special thing in Illinois. ”

Timmerman committed himself to the University of Southern California and was hit by pneumonia late in the season. The senior was still antibiotics during the section meeting. While he felt great during the state final, the disease had an impact on his training until last week of the season.

But on the last day of the season he exhibited all of this and decided on it. His performance was crucial for third place in Trevians, which he felt like a long shot 12 months ago.

“It may have been more important than the state championship title to get this trophy,” he said. “Last year our State team has two thirds of seniors. We only had three returnees and I was one of them. We had to build a whole new team pretty much and everyone appeared. ”

Knox Noble (6th) and Charlie Conniff (12th) were also in diving, Goldstein in the 200 individual Medley (11th) and 100 Butterfly (10th), Teddy O'Donnell in the 200 in (16.) and Devaraj free (10th).

Almost all entries from the Trevians improved their place between Friday and Saturday, which led to third place to jump the team.

Runkle saw a lot of fame, including five state trophies and a championship in 2018. He said that this year's last day was his favorite.

“These were the best Saturdays that I was in my eleven years earlier,” he said. “How these children all stood on this occasion. It was really fun to see, to see fun how our seniors are at the front and enjoy that our second, juniors and newcomers follow. … I couldn't believe the trip home; I was so enthusiastic. My heart was full. ”
