Big Ten and Sec control the future of College Football Playoffs

The first 12-team college football playoff came off less than two months ago, and already discussed a new format among the Powerbrokers in college football.

In the past two weeks, the directors and commissioners of the Big Ten and the SEC athlete have met together with the Executive Committee of College Football Playoffs to cards the future of the playoff. The current 12-team format is under contract next season, but 2026 is open for adjustments, and the big ten and the seconds seem to be in the driver's seat.

“It is a conversation about the potential structuring of games for the championship that is actually decided on the field,” said Michigan Athletic Director and former chairman of College Football Playoff Committee Manuel Manuel in the episode of “The Triple Option”, where he came to Urban Meyer and Rob Stone.

According to reports, the most discussed proposal is a 14-team playoff. In this scenario, the Big Ten and the Sec received four automatic bids, the ACC and BIG 12 each received two, one place would go to the best-placed Non-Power 5 conference champion, and the last place would be a wide range for the highest non-conference champion.

“If you compare us with professional football, everyone will play for a playoff spot in the past week,” said Manuel. “We don't have that in college. We have championship games, but only a small number of teams play in these games. This year, for example, only 18 out of 132 teams play in championship games. A format that would fight more teams for playoff places would definitely offer added value.”

When asked whether the proposal to conferences outside the Big Ten and the SEC would be unfair, Manuel replied: “We have the feeling that we would earn these places in this format anyway. They actually play games to earn their place. For me, this is a format that reflects how many of our leagues and teams work when achieving the playoffs.”

It is still uncertain which format ultimately becomes standard, but it is clear that some fans are more excited about the upcoming changes than others.
