The police examine the death of inmates in the NY prison because 15 employees are on leave

A police investigation is underway after an inmate died in a New York prison on Saturday, in which more than a dozen employees who were connected to the incident were then put in administrative leave, officers said.

The 22 -year -old Messiah Nantwi died on Monday evening at the Wynn Hospital in Utica, the State Department of Corrections. No details about the circumstances of his death were published, but governor Kathy Hochul pointed out that “disturbing behavior” was involved.

“While the investigation of this incident lasts, early reports indicate an extremely worrying behavior that leads to Mr. Nantwi's death, and I am obliged to account for everyone involved,” she said in a statement late Tuesday afternoon.

Fifteen corrections associated with the incident were put in their direction, said Hochul. A spokesman for the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) said on Monday that 11 employees were brought on vacation.

Nantwi was recorded in the mid-state prison system north of Utica, where in 2023 he was in separate incidents within 30 hours within 30 hours.

He already served a five -year prison sentence for possessing a second degree criminal weapon in connection with a shootout from 2021.

The correction department gave on Monday that she informed the Attorney General and the New York state police on Saturday.

Nantwi died two weeks after six prison officers had been charged with Robert Brooks, who was missed by the guards in the Marcy Correctional facility – only a few hundred meters away – in an attack that she had referred to as “brutal” and “sick”.

Hochul said that Nantwi's death should accelerate the reform in state prisons and in the statement on Tuesday: “This tragedy is a memory of the need for real systemic change within our correctional system-starting with the guidelines that I implemented after the murder of Robert Brooks, such as the use of body-worn cameras, the use of Bodcamas, which Whistleblower losses and the review of the culture of the stock market notial, and the review of culture bring with damage connections. “

The Department of Corrections said that it is up to the district's medical examiner to determine the cause of the death of Nantwi and whether he should make the result of his investigation public.

In a statement, the state police said that they investigate “the fact of his death” with the correction department.

Stan German, Managing Director of New York County Defender Services, said that Nantwi was accused of serious crimes, but had a violent education and faced “considerable psychological health problems”.

“It was true, he was imprisoned, but he still had the claim to be a basic human dignity and security,” German said in an explanation of the Associated Press. “Instead, he suffered from state correction officers who work in a toxic culture that mainly ignores our society.”

Donna Lieberman, director of the New York Civil Liberties Union, said in an explanation that it was not an isolated incident.

“We are extremely worried about the reported murder of another imprisoned person in Marcy by the judicial officers and demand complete transparency and justice,” she said.

“Nobody should die in custody from prison officers who are charged with the security of people in the institutions of doccs,” she added.

The ongoing strike measures continue to affect the operations in New York prisons, although last week between Hochul and the union, which represents correction officers, has a business. As part of the agreement, the officials should come back to work by Saturday, NBC New York reported and quoted a memo that summarizes the deal.

“The ongoing illegal interruption of work is a considerable security risk, and I repeat the need that prison officers have to return to work,” said Hochul in her explanation on Tuesday.

A spokesman for the union, the prison officer of the New York State and the police benevolent association did not immediately answer on Tuesday evening when asked for comments.

The correction department refused to express questions about Nantwi's death by the AP.

On Tuesday, Hochul offered words that should comfort Nantwi's family: “The people in New York extend Mr. Nantwi's family and relatives our deepest condolences.”
