Gasleck in the new Senegal-Mauritan field is not a threat

Efforts are made to repair a gas leak on the natural gas field of the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA), which is located on the coasts of Senegal and Mauritania, the British energy company BP announced on Wednesday.

The field that started operating on December 31 was developed jointly by BP, Kosmos Energy, Mauritania SMH and Senegal's state property.

The leak was discovered on February 19 in one of the GTA fountains, which led to a reaction from the Mauritan Ministry of Environment, which announced ongoing studies.

A risk for employees or considerable environmental damage, which is described as a sub-rate underwater gas bubbles, was presented as unlikely.

BP assured that his environmental impact assessment showed negligible effects and that repairs are already underway with specialized devices and the mobilized staff.

The three remaining wells at the location continue normal production while the problem is treated.

Despite the leak, the GTA field is expected to produce around 2.5 million tons of liquefied natural gas annually, with the high hope that its production will contribute significantly to Senegal and Mauritania's economic growth.

The incident has expressed concerns on site, whereby the monument tank-Africa based in Dakar urges the cause, the scope and possible effects of the leak after transparency.
