57-year-old downloads fake bank app, loses 7 Lakh

Ahmedabad: In a case of sophisticated online fraud, a 57-year-old LIC employee from Naranpura RS 6.97 Lakh was lost after downloading a fake bank app that was sent by WhatsApp cybercriminals, which is a posed Union Bank of India Officer.
Gautam Tomar, 57, a resident of Naranpura, works as an administrative representative at the Kalupur branch of lic. In his FIR with cybercrime Police, Tomar said that on January 5, 2025 he visited the Union Bank ATM in the relief road to activate his new ATM card. Despite repeated attempts, the ATM card could not be activated. Shortly afterwards, Tomar received a WhatsApp message from an unknown number with the Union Bank of India logo as a profile picture. The message that was supposedly sent by the bank's official support team instructed him to download an APK file called “Union Bank Aadhaar Update” to solve the ATM problem. Tomar downloaded the file and registered its account details.
Later, however, he became suspicious and visited the bank just to find out that the message was fake and the APK file was a malicious link. He immediately deleted the app, but the damage was done.
The next morning he found that Lakh had been withdrawn 6.97 rupees from his savings account in six non -authorized transactions. Tomar immediately blocked his ATM and account after calling the UNION Bank helpline and filing a complaint with the cybercrime helpline. He then entered a police complaint with the cyber criminal police police.
