Changes in the first communion celebrations of Cork lead to disagreements

Changes planned for community and first denomination celebrations in Cork have repeatedly caused disagreements between primary school teachers and Bishop Fintan Gavin.

Bishop Gavin recently sent a letter to the priests who asked the community in order to be outside of school lessons only on weekends and the first confessions. The request was not well received by teachers who had to give up their free time to participate in the events.

The changes followed a workshop between priests, teachers and school leaders when it was agreed that the candidates should have the opportunity to make their families present instead of their class groups in order to highlight the role of the family.

In conversation with the Irish independent, P. Tom Hayes said: “When Bishop Fintan recently wrote about the first reconciliation and the first Holy Community to the communities, he wanted to remind people that these key moments in the life of the children were always celebrated with the current family and in the local community of the local community.”

Mick Finn, a former city council of Cork, who is located in a number of school authorities, said: “Change of ceremonies in the weekends are probably considered a violation of their own life, and many will already go beyond working with teams, homework clubs, etc.
