The legislators in Florida try to join the Southern Rail Commission to restore the company between New Orleans and Florida. Bob Johnston

Tallahasee, Florida – The legislators in Florida consider laws to join the state of the Southern Rail Commission – but the motivation for this legislation could face a roadblock.

Invoices in the state of representatives of the state (HB 833) and the Senate (SB 966) state that the goal of joining the SRC Sunset Limited The service ended on this route in 2005 after hurricane Katrina. The house bill is sponsored by the state representatives of Yvonne Hayes Hinson (D-Gainesville) and Daryl Dampbell (D-Fort Lauderdale), while Senator Tracy Davis (D-Jacksonville) sponsored the Senate.

The identical invoices find that one of the SRC projects should restore the restoration of the service in Florida Panhandle to Südflorida and that “Florida can use the authority to study a multi -state of coalition by joining SRC to study, plan and receive federal financing for the passenger railway … without issuing this state to give up state funds for infrastructure. “The success of the SRC in the restoration of the service between New Orleans and Mobile, Ala.

However, these conditions for this service can at least temporarily block an extension to Florida. When the city council of Mobile approved an agreement to finance the Gulf Coast Service, the council members changed the agreement to take into account a clause that the city could terminate its agreement if this service is expanded beyond the current plans for two round trips per day – or if the service is extended to the east or north of mobile [see “Mobile, Ala., council votes to approve Amtrak funding …,” Trains News Wire, Aug. 6, 2024]. This clause was added by council members who concern itself, the passenger service could affect the operation in the port of mobile communications.

The three -year agreement limits Mobile's responsibility for a grant for this period, according to which new sources of financing must be found. Without the inclusion of the financing, mobile would probably not be able to continue to present restrictions on the expansion of the service.
