CMA completes the investigation of the Microsoft Openai partnership

The British competition and the Market Authority (CMA) have completed its antitrust examination of the partnership between Microsoft and Openaai and have not found any measures for measures.

The British competitive guard said that the collaboration does not justify a investigation under the law on contrary practices in Great Britain.

The investigation started in December 2023 was triggered by concerns that Microsoft's essential investment in Openaai – almost $ 14 billion since 2019 – could donate competition.

The authority was concerned that the partnership could possibly reduce the competition in Great Britain, especially in the delivery of cloud computing services and productivity software as well as on the thresholder for accelerated computers.

The concerns of the CMA also stretched out on possible effects on the competition in markets in which Microsoft and Openaai overlap, such as the development and distribution of foundation models (FMS) and FM-based services, including chatbots.

After a thorough examination, however, the CMA found that no relevant merger situation was created and that it is not responsible to still check the partnership.

CMA said: “A statement that the partnership does not develop a relevant merger situation does not state that there are no competitive concerns from their company.”

When achieving this decision, the CMA evaluated potential sources of influence or control, including the investment and participation of Microsoft in Openais Corporate Governance, the offer of computing resources from Microsoft as well as in intellectual property and marketing Microsoft.

“CMA closes the examination of the Microsoft Openai partnership” was originally created and published by Verictic, a brand of Globaldata.
