Voluntary work to do Lahaaina to prevent another fire tractions

Lahaina (Hawaiinewsnow) – Kaiauu initiatives began to be the only mission to plant the forest via Lahaina after the catastrophe of 2023.

About a year and a half later, the goal of enduring Lahaina himself.

“We will probably never see that this will be harvested in our lives. But everything we plant here is not for us. It is for the next generation, ”said Kaiauu initiatives Aina Steward Kalena Shim.

Before Kalena worked for Kaiauu initiatives, he worked in the visitor industry.

After the fire in 2023, she felt called to cultivate the country where she grew up.

“Piha Ka Puuwai,” said Kalena. “My heart is full and I feel more in line with what to do.”

Kalena is one of thousands who have joined the mission to restore 2.2 tomorrow via Lahaina.

Their goal is to play more than 500 acres.

“We want to be able to come here and gather the leisurely makers and to know that this is their place and space where they can come to gather ealii where they can pick plumerie, where they can pick Ti blade. But it is mutual. You have to give Aina back and come voluntarily, ”said Shannon II.

Kaiauu initiatives are mainly based on donations and volunteers.

Kalena is the only employee of the organization and was initially hired by the national grant of the employee.

When the financing for this abruptly ended last week, her position was cut.

Thanks to the generous private donations, however, she can keep her job – at least for the time being.

“The federal financing freezed, it was scary. It was effective. But it is again a awakening that we are all more independent from our community, ”she said.

“We are 90% on all our products, our food, everything,” said II. “So what we want to do here in Kaiauu because the government we have now … We want to be self -preserved.”

The goal of the Kaiauu initiatives is to finally combine with other similar groups in Lahaina in order to build all of West Maui.

“It is a movement – and it is one forever movement – and we go with this movement Holomua,” said Kalena.
