Mayor Ed Gainey publishes video that calls Stephen Zappala racist, local leaders react – wpxi

Pittsburgh -Mayor Ed Gainey posted a video in his social media accounts on Thursday afternoon, in which he called district attorney Stephen Zappala as “racist”.

“I said that he was a racist. I don't support them, ”said Gainey in the video. It was part of a speech of potential voters.

Two members of the city council talked to Channel 11 about the video.

“I thought it was shameful. I really did it. It is not the kind of behavior that I want to look out of our mayor. I will tell you, I think he has to apologize. I have known Steve Zappala and his family for a long time. I don't think he has a racist bone in his body, ”said City Councilor Anthony Coghill.

Channel 11 also showed the video to the City Councilor Khari Mosley when he arrived for Gainey campaigns during a fundraising campaign.

“I don't know if he talks about the overall judicial system because we know that the judicial system was not fair. I didn't have the same business with the district prosecutor. I would have to talk to the mayor to get a better sense to see where he derived this comment from. He said he said it directly to the district prosecutor, so it is something that he clearly feels about, ”said Mosley.

Gainey was present and before we visited him, we asked him for a comment. He said he would talk afterwards, but went before that happened.

We have received an explanation of the Gainey campaign in which it says:

“It is no secret that the mayor and many, many western PA Democrats have disapproved of the actions of the da for a long time – and have campaigned with the democratic candidate Matt Dugan. At a time when Trump rolls back the protection of civil rights that have been cheered on by white supremacists, the Democrats cannot be afraid of calling a spade as a spade and standing up for the constitutional rights of our voters. “

We contacted the public prosecutor to make a comment, but have not yet heard.
