“Several people” who were arrested in the EU bribes, combined with Huawei | European Union

Several people were arrested and houses were searched in the European Parliament in connection with the Chinese technology giant Huawei as part of an investigation of the alleged bribery and corruption in the European Parliament, said the Belgian prosecutors.

The investigative judge responsible for the case asked to determine seals in the offices of two European parliamentary assistants who are supposedly involved.

“The alleged bribery is said to have benefited Huawei,” said Belgium's prosecutor on Thursday afternoon in an explanation after an earlier statement in which the company was not mentioned.

The first explanation stated that several people had been arrested for interviewing their alleged participation “in active corruption within the European Parliament” as well as counterfeits and use of counterfeits. The prosecutor said that the alleged crimes were “committed by a criminal organization” and was practiced regularly and discreetly from 2021 to the present day.

Since Donald Trump's first administration, the European countries have been intensively exposed to the United States in order not to use Huawei devices in their 5G networks for national security reasons.

Huawei was contacted for a comment, but still has to make an explanation of the reports.

It is suspected that people who are involved in the alleged criminal “cash for influence” have been paid for taking political positions or for “excessive gifts” such as food, travel expenses and invitations to play football. All of this was done to “promote purely private commercial interests in the context of political decisions,” said the prosecutor.

Investigators also check whether money washing has taken place because they suspect that intermediaries may have received payments to disguise the path.

The allegations were reported to the Belgian media for the first time, and the investigative office followed the money, which said that around 15 current and former Meps were “on the radar” of the investigators.

The authorities said that “several people” were arrested for survey, including a male suspect in France under a European arrest warrant, but rejected further details. More than 21 searches were carried out by more than 100 police officers in all of Belgium and in Portugal.

A spokesman for the European Parliament said: “We have received an application for cooperation between the Belgian authorities to support the investigation that Parliament will quickly honor and fully distinguish.”

Transparency activists said that the allegations were as serious as the Qatargate scandal, who shook the European Parliament three years ago, as a Greek vice president of Parliament Eva Kaili and an Italian former Mate-Mate-Mate-Mate-Mate-Panzer tank, which was charged with corruption, under activities that were charged by the police about Activities that were charged by the police, over -afforded activities that were charged with cheap activities.

In January 2025, Belgian former MP Maria Arena said that she was charged with participation in a criminal organization as part of the same investigation.

Everyone denies any misconduct. The case still has to be brought to court.
