Arkansas Tech University organized more than 1,700 high school Future Farmers of America students for career development events and competitions on Thursday, March 13.

ATU President Dr. Russell Jones helped welcoming the FFA members to campus during an opening ceremony in Tucker Coliseum.

“It is always exciting if we have the opportunity to organize students with interest in agriculture, agriculture and agricultural education on our campus,” said Jones. “Agriculture is located in the DNA of our university. You may not know that, but the original name of the Arkansas Tech University was the second agricultural school.

“Arkansas Tech has grown in the past 115 years and has developed into the regional, comprehensive university that we are today,” continued Jones. “But agriculture has always remained an important part of who we are and I don't think that will ever change.”

Students from more than 80 schools in the FFA Northwest Arkansas district took part in 14 competitions. About 100 K-12 agricultural teachers were also present.

“I have first -hand knowledge of the importance of agriculture for our state,” said Jones. “I grew up on a small farm near Marianna in the east of Arkansas and taught myself many of the lessons that made it possible for me to pursue my goals in my life. I welcome each of you for your participation in the FFA. Like me, the lessons you learn and the friendships you develop with your FFA colleagues will benefit you for the rest of your life. “
