AG examination of the death of Shirley Teen completed

Claudia Stinson says her son Anthony will not be forgotten.

He was hit and killed by a police officer by Suffolk County when he ran his bike near his Shirley house in September 2023.

Stinson said: “Anthony was alive, Anthony was nice” and described him as a “masterpiece”.

She was disappointed with the investigation of the AG, which led to the decision not being charged against the official.

The General Prosecutor's office partly said:

“In this case, although the official caused death, the evidence does not undoubtedly determine that the civil servant's behavior was a gross deviation from the standard that had been observed by a reasonable officer under the same circumstances or that the official would have deliberately disregarded an essential and unjustified risk of death. The official accelerated because she reacted to an emergency. She met precautionary measures by activating the emergency lights and siren of her vehicle, and when the official saw it, she tried to wave around him. There was no evidence that the official was affected by drugs or alcohol or that it was otherwise distracted at the time of the crash. OSI will therefore not file an indictment against the officer. “

The general prosecutor's office also said:

“OSI also recommends that SCPD equip all police vehicles with dashboard cameras that automatically record when officials activate the emergency lights of the police car to promote transparency, accountability and evidence. In this case, the officer's vehicle was equipped with a dashcam, but the official did not activate the dash cam when it activated the need lights or sirens of the car. “
