The big story

In the search for the universe with mysterious spark energy outbreaks

May 2024

If our universe was less than half as old as it is today, an energy boost could be filled with a popcorn value from a sunny somewhere in the middle of a compact group of galaxies. About 8 billion years later, radio waves from this burst reached the earth and were captured by a highly developed low -frequency radio telescope in the Australian outback.

The signal that arrived in June 2022 and took less than half a millisecond is one of the growing class of mysterious radio signals, the almost radio burders named Fast Radio Bursts. In the past 10 years, astronomers have picked up almost 5,000 of them. This was particularly special: almost twice as high as what was previously observed and three and a half times more energetic.

Nobody knows what fast radio bursts cause. They flash in an apparently random and unpredictable pattern from the whole sky. Despite the secret, these radio waves are extremely useful. Read the whole story.
