Columbus Fire reacts to several gas leaks

Columbus, Miss. (WCBI) – Columbus Fire and Rescue reacted fully to the latest gas leaks.

You answered seven calls last week, including five in one day.

“If it is an accident and we are called up by the company, we are standby for you. If we are now called by a resident, we have meters that we can see, a gas in the house, ”said Jaquay Sherrod, the educator for Fire & Life Safety at Columbus Fire & Rescue.

CFR should call 911 and your gas company immediately if you smell gas.

“We ask the residents to evacuate this area by smelling the gas, and most importantly try not to examine where the gas leak is. Just let someone do it professionally, ”said Sherrod.

Apart from the smell, there are other signs that can refer to a gas leak.

“Colorful grass, brownishly colored grass. When you see how dust flies out of the ground, there is no wind blowing, it is a way that a gas leak is on the ground, ”said Sherd.

Budding water on the floor is also a sign.

Natural gas is odorless, but gas companies add the chemical mercaptan, similar to a lazy egg, to draw people aware of the presence of a leak.

“We ask you not to use anything that can create a spark including cell phones. Don't try to cut out your lights, and of course no fire signs or the like because natural gas is explosive, ”said Sherrod.

They also asked that they open their doors for ventilation.

CFR recommended that you get fresh air if you were exposed to gas.

Headache, nausea and dizziness are symptoms of a gas exposure.
