Troy celebrates international women's day with “one afternoon with music and poems”

The college for communication and art art at Troy University and the John M. Long School of Music organized the annual celebration on the international Women's Day on March 8.

In the Wilson Auditorium of Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, “Music and Poems” musical performances and poems by 13 Roy faculties and employees were equipped. Dr. Hui Ting Yang, Director of John M. Long School of Music, and Dr. Shari Hoppin, Associate Professor for the Hall School of Journalism, was a co-organizer for the event.

The departments represented included English, history and philosophy, the John M. Long School of Music, the Hall School for Journalism and Communication, International Programs, the Sorrell College of Business and the Department of World Languages ​​and Cultures.

Both the performances and the readings focused on works by female poets and composers who highlight various topics through international pieces and verses from their home countries. The language for reading poems included Mandarin Chinese, Russian, Spanish, Polish, Urdu and English.

Dr. Yang says that the best part of this event is to meet women and work with women who are brilliant, friendly, hard and persistent.

“The idea of ​​improving the cooperation between music and other disciplines and combining people through music and art was initiated in 2022,” said Dr. Yang. “The purpose of this event is to create the cooperation between different departments and to combine, combine and promote Troy's talented and talented female faculty and employees.”

Dr. Shari Hoppin Las Margret Atwood's poem “The Moment” and says that she is grateful for participation and contributions to the annual event.

“I like to work with colleagues to celebrate international women's day,” said Dr. Hoppin. “Every year I am grateful for the women who say yes to participation and contribute their time and talent.”

Dr. Ayesha Tariq, Associate Professor of Marketing, has participated in the event since the beginning.

“The thing that I enjoy and appreciate the most is the feeling of community with other specialist faculties,” she said. “I met an amazing group of people during this event.”

Dr. Tariq decided to read the poem “The laughter of a woman” by Fahmida Riaz in Urdu, the national language of Pakistan, and English.

“Many of their poems deal with questions of social and gender -specific hierarchies, especially in the Pakistani social context,” said Dr. Tariq. “I find most of these topics universal and free of national restrictions. It seemed appropriate to share one of her poems on International Women's Day. The specific poem that I recited had to do with the tenderness and the strength of a woman, the fact that people in power and wealth positions are either not or are not ready or both to secure peace for them. Only the breeze shares freedom and joy with her. I am not sure if the poet meant, but this was my interpretation of the poem. “

This is the fourth year in which this event took place as an opportunity for public relations, connection and celebration of international women's day.
