The director of the city of Meridian public security offers tips to stay up to date while possible storms

Meridian, Miss. (WTOK) – According to the National Weather Service Jackson, a storm outbreak is expected in large parts of the state on Saturday.

The main threat will be tornados, including some violent and long -term. It is also likely that harmful winds of 60 to 70 miles per hour and a big hail are.

“Our area is in the highest category of risk – category 5,” said Doug Stephens, director of the city's public security.

Stephens said that the window for this storm was from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., he also noticeaves a slight change in the storms overnight.

“Historically, this risk has produced large storms, such as the Rolling fork (2023) as well as Louisville and Hattiesburg in years,” said Stephens. “The city of Meridian will continue to monitor these storm conditions, which are a threat to our area.”

Disregated trees and power outages are expected during this time.

The director of public security advises Meridian Area residents to have several options for receiving warning information: local television and radio, the Internet, the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) Wetterradio, outdoor sirens as well as family, friends and employees.

Stephens also encourages citizens and companies to register for the encoded notification system in order to obtain warnings and updates at emergency events. There are three ways to register:

“All rescue workers in the city and the district are ready to respond to all events at one moment,” said Stephens.

Citizens are emphatically recommended to stay at home when the storm in its area approaches – and if this is not the case.

“If your area is not affected, this is not time to have visits,” warned Stephens. “This could restrict the ability of our rescue workers to get to the needy.”
