Rally to support the runner

Portsmouth, Virginia – More than 50 people visited a rally outside of IC Norcom High School on Thursday evening to support the runner, who has been charged in a viral route baton since then.

The video of the VHSL Indoor Track State Championship of last week shows the IC Norcom -athlete Alaila Everett and the Athlete of the Brookville High School, Kaelen Tucker, during the second leg of the 4×200 meter relay finals. In the video, Tucker from Everett's baton can be hit in the head. The judges quickly disqualified the Norcom team after the incident.

The Brookville runner has a concussion and a possibly broken skull, says Bethany Harrison, lawyer of Lynchburg Commonwealth. Harrison confirmed that Everett is faced with an count of attack and battery.

The viral attention gained by the video has led to harassment and death threats that are directed against Everett, who claims that this is an accident.

While the rally on Thursday, a tearful Everett thanked those who showed support and claimed that it was not targeted.

“I would never do this. I would not harm anyone. I am not a fighter,” she said to gather the participants.

The rally was organized by Germain Green, a parent of three Norcom students.

“I found it devastating to see what this young lady did. As a former athlete who ran the route, this is unintentional, ”said Green.

The President of the NAACP of Portsmouth, James Boyd, also spoke at the rally.

“She is not an attacker. Alaila is an honorary student at the Norcom High School. We will not lean back and the criminal judicial system will have it defined, ”said Boyd.

Everett's mother stood by her daughter during the rally.

“My baby didn't do it. I know who I raised. I will get up for my 10 toes, ”said Zeketa, Everett's mother during the rally.
